Give it a proper clean, inside and out
Dirt and grime left on the exterior over winter can damage paintwork and seals. Inside, remove all food (even tins and packets, remember mice don’t discriminate) and give it a thorough clean to avoid mould and unwanted visitors setting up home while you’re not using it.
Check the seals and roof
Winter is tough on caravan seals. Check around windows, doors and roof vents for any cracking or wear and reseal if needed. A small gap now can mean a much bigger, damper problem by spring.
Sort the battery
Leaving a caravan battery connected and unused over winter is one of the most common causes of battery failure. Either remove it and store it somewhere dry and cool, or use a trickle charger if you’re keeping it in place.
Protect against damp
Damp is the biggest threat to a caravan over winter. Leave roof vents slightly open for airflow, use moisture-absorbing products inside and check for any leaks before you store it. A small drip in October can mean a big repair bill in April.
Think about where you’re storing it
This is the part most people skip but where your caravan spends winter matters just as much as how you prepare it. Leaving it on the drive exposes it to weather and unfortunately, makes it a visible target for theft. A dedicated, secure storage site keeps it out of sight, off the road and away from the elements.
